McNish Mountian

Antigua (pronounced An-tee-gah) is a British Leeward Island. Formerly a British colony, it has retained strong links to British tradition.  Recently tourism has undergone tremendous expansion, and the island is now popular with tourists of all types. Antigua is best known for its 365 beautiful beaches, magnificent dive sites and interesting historical maritime sites. It is also known as a major Caribbean yachting port.  In the picture to the right has the McNish Mountian marked by a circle.  The Mountian is located in the southwest side of the island.

Antigua is located in the Caribbean chain south of Barbuda.  It is 108 square miles.  McNish Mountian is the second highest peak on the island at a little over 1200 ft.  I found a website which spoke of the history of The Barbuda Castle, and in it it mentioned  a Mr McNish who was killed in a slave uprising after he had abused them. (Served him right).   You can find the entire artical Here.  The picture to the right shows the two islands.  The northren most is Barbuda and the southren is Antigua.

The picture to the right gives you an idea where in the Caribbean Antigua and Barbuda are located.  I have been told thru emails that a Robert McNish went from Scotland to Antigua in the 1700's to start a sugar plantation.  At the time sugar was more profitable to grow in this climate than tobacco even though it took more manpower.  I wonder now if he actually was on Barbuda with the castle information.  Regardless of that, their is a McNish Mountian on the island of Antigua.

Grand McNish Scotch Whiskey

Here is some information on Grand McNish Scotch Whiskey.  It is made by MacDuff International Scotch Whiskey.  You can click Here to go to their website.  Grand McNish Scotch Whiskey was established in 1863 by a Robert MacNish and is available in standard and 12 year old versions.  According to the website Roberts father John owned and operated a shop in Glasgow, Scotland where he sold whiskey, tea and tobacco.  In 1863 after the death of his father, Robert McNish decided to put his efforts into just Scotch Whiskey.  At this time the Highlanders drank a heavier malt that had a strong aroma.  Robert changed this in his Scotch Whiskey to somthing softer as to attract more sales outside of Scotland.  He created this Scotch Whiskey out of trial and error and used more than 40 different Whiskeys to get it just right.  In 1887 his two sons, George and John joined the business.  They continued on with the business after their fathers death in 1904.  The world wide Scotch Whiskey boom between 1900 and 1914 proved to be an excellent time for the brothers.  Both Brothers continued on with the company until 1943, when at the age of 77 George passed away.  His brother John followed 2 years later.  The image to the right is of Robert McNish.

You can purchase Grand MacNish Scotch Whiskey at most liquor stores.  If they do not have it in stock, they usually can order it in for you.  I have personally tried a sip of this fine Scotch Whiskey, and not being a Scotch drinker it hit me pretty hard.  However, in speaking to a gentleman who appreciated Scotch Whiskey in general, when he tried the Grand MacNish Scotch Whiskey he commented that it was indeed a fine product.

A great place to go to find all sorts of Grand MacNish Scotch Whiskey collectables is E-Bay.  Here you can search for MacNish, McNish, MacNeish or whatever your namesake is and look for the results.  When searching for MacNish you are bound to come across many items up for bid.  I have gotten Whiskey glasses, wall mirrors and bottle tops from sellers here myself.  There are also ashtrays, adds and virtually everything else that the makers of Grand MacNish can slap their name on.  To the right is an example of one of the items up for bid.  I belive it sold for less than $10.00 U.S. currency.

If you know of any more famous McNishs please let us know!  I would love to put more on this page as I find it.  Also, if you have any more to add on these famous McNishs listed here, or more images you would like to see on this webpage, email them to me and I will put them on the website.
